Maintaining a mod
Shipping version 1.0.0 is a milestone, but real software engineering begins the day after. A mod is a living guest inside someone else's closed-source game. The moment Rockstar patches GTA V or a user installs twenty other mods alongside yours, unexpected edge cases will emerge.
Surviving Rockstar game updates
Every three to four months, Rockstar Games releases a title update for GTA V. Almost immediately, your comments section will fill with panic: "Mod broken after today's update!"
Understand what actually happens:
- Your C# mod did not break: Your
.dllis intact. - ScriptHookV broke: ScriptHookV depends on hardcoded memory addresses inside
GTA5.exe. When Rockstar recompiles the game executable, those addresses shift, and Alexander Blade's hook refuses to inject to prevent crashes.
Your response as a maintainer:
- Post an announcement: "Waiting for Alexander Blade to update ScriptHookV for the new game build. Do not reinstall or modify files."
- Once the new ScriptHookV is published, test your mod against the new build. In 99% of cases, your C# script works immediately without recompiling.
Triage: How to handle bug reports
Users rarely file clean bug reports. They often post: "It crashes when I press F9 fix it."
Never argue or guess. Always ask for the flight recorder:
"Please open
Grand Theft Auto V/ScriptHookVDotNet.login Notepad, scroll to the bottom, and paste any lines marked [ERROR] or mentioning this mod."
A single stack trace tells you in five seconds whether the issue is a missing model in their modified update.rpf, an out-of-date .NET runtime, or a genuine bug in your code.
The golden rule of changelogs
Whenever you push an update, provide an honest changelog. Group changes under three clear headings:
### v1.1.0 - 2026-10-15
- **Added**: Added support for custom destination blips via settings.ini.
- **Fixed**: Fixed chauffeur continuing to drive if the vehicle caught fire.
- **Changed**: Increased default pickup arrival timeout from 6 to 8 seconds.
Keeping an accurate changelog builds immense trust with the modding community and keeps your own head clear as projects grow.
Now you have mastered the complete lifecycle of GTA V modding. You are ready for Project 10: Capstone.
